Reference Films for ‘Drama/Melodrama’ Genre

The following are the films I will be taking inspiration from for my opening sequence, “PREJUDICE.”

Taare Zameen Par

‘PREJUDICE’ was inspired by ‘Taare Zameen Par’ in terms of the storyline. Ishaan is a dyslexic kid and he fails to do well in his studies like other kids in his class, or his brother. This ends up deeply upsetting his parents as they fail to understand that Ishaan has a learning disability, and instead of understanding him, his parents send him to a boarding school at just the age of 8 years so that he would focus more on studied and get better on his own.

With this concept, I felt like one of the most painful things a person can go through is being hurt by their own parents. Thus, in ‘prejudice’, we can witness that the mother is being biased towards Ammar and favoring him more than Esha. The twist is that since the mother is also a female, Esha fails to understand why she would act in such a way. Moreover, similarly to Taare Zameen Par, ‘prejudice’ also revolves around a social issue which is mostly common in countries in the Southwest Asian countries.

ARTICLE 15

Prejudice was inspired by Article 15 in terms of the lighting. Article 15 is based on the socio-political situation of India, a country where caste based discrimination is popular. The officers embark on a journey of acceptance and change. The first two screenshots are of the very beginning of the film and the ending of the film. As seen below, when things are in order (at the beginning and the end), the colors on screen are bright (brown/yellowish/green)

But as soon as chaos prevails (a murder takes place), the colors that are seen on the screen are very dull, with an overall blue-ish hue throughout the screen.

With the same idea, I am planning to use blue/dull colors while editing Esha’s scenes and yellow/brown colors while editing Ammar’s scenes to show a contrast between the two characters – Esha being troubled and Ammar being unbothered.
